Bishop Dunne Announces Mr. Thomas Maj as President
Dear Bishop Dunne Catholic School Community,
On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Presidential Search Committee, I am excited to announce the appointment of Mr. Thomas Maj as the president of Bishop Dunne Catholic School, effective July 1, 2019.
Expressing his confidence in placing the future of Bishop Dunne in Mr. Maj's capable hands, Most Reverend Edward J. Burns, Bishop of the Diocese of Dallas, said, "I believe Tom Maj will be a tremendous blessing to the Bishop Dunne community. Due to his wealth of experience, he brings the knowledge, insight, and confidence that are sure to make him a strong president. I am pleased and grateful that such an outstanding educator will lead this important community in the Diocese of Dallas."
Mr. Maj (pronounced "May") has pursued a career in education that has spanned over thirty years as a teacher, principal, head of school, and president. He is currently the president of St. Joseph High School of Victoria, Texas, and previously led Catholic schools in Ohio and Michigan.
Reflecting on Mr. Maj's three decades of experience, Dr. Matthew Vereecke, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, shared, "Tom is a creative thinker who brings to this position the requisite knowledge, experience, and zeal to chart the school's transformative next steps to:
- Pursue the school's mission and maintain/advance the unique nature of the school
- Support the efforts of principal Mary Beth Marchiony as she guides the school's faculty and staff to deliver academic excellence with a Catholic identity, and
- Obtain, maintain, advance, and sustain the school's operational vitality.
Mr. Maj's selection concludes a comprehensive nationwide search process, commenced late last summer, guided by the Presidential Search Committee established by the Bishop Dunne Board of Directors, and chaired by Arturo M. Herrera, III, Bishop Dunne Class of 2009. The search process included multiple interviews which led to the identification of finalists who were brought to Dallas for community interviews with the school's faculty, executive leadership team, principal, parents, students, board members, and Bishop Burns.
Mr. Herrera expressed his appreciation to Carlos Peña and Peña Search Consulting for their professional efforts in support of the committee as it pursued its mission.
Acknowledging that the process was a collective and collaborative effort of many, Mr. Herrera stated, "I am incredibly grateful to the search committee, who invested so much time, effort, reflection, and commitment to this process over the last several months, especially committee members Shannon Cerise, Erica Culton, and Shari Hicks, who brought critical parent and faculty perspectives to the process."
He added, "I also want to thank the entire Bishop Dunne Catholic School community for participating in the process. Their insights were invaluable to the committee, especially the feedback received on the characteristics of presence, fitness for the community, work ethic/style, values, and vision."
The Bishop Dunne Catholic School community enthusiastically looks forward to what promises to be a bright future for the school under Mr. Maj's leadership. Future announcements will be forthcoming as plans emerge for Mr. Maj's arrival to Dallas.
